The cost of financial dysfunction in City of Joburg

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg’s financial woes are not just playing out across political lines.

Residents are living the consequences of a city battling mounting debt, collapsing infrastructure, and failing service delivery, and now, after Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s scathing letter to Mayor Dada Morero, there are intensified concerns about whether South Africa’s economic hub can still afford to function.

Treasury said Johannesburg is bleeding billions.

Residents complained that the city’s infrastructure is doing the same thing.

It is the real consequence of the city’s poor financial management.

Treasury warned the city owes creditors more than R25billion, with only R3.9 billion available.

As Johannesburg residents continue to battle service delivery failures, the growing concern is whether the city’s financial hole will deepen, and infrastructure collapse even further.
