Cradock Four | Families of victims resume pursuit of delayed justice

JOHANNESBURG - The families of the apartheid activists known as the Cradock Four are hoping that the truth about their brutal murder will finally come out.

The Cradock Four is a collective name given to Fort Calata, Mathew Goniwe, Sicelo Mhlali and Sparrow Mkonto.

40 years ago, in June 1985, they were arrested at a roadblock set up by the Security Branch whilst travelling from Cradock to Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape.

They were brutally assaulted and murdered.

Two inquests before the dawn of democracy did not name perpetrators or lead to prosecutions.

In 1999 six police officers appeared by the Amnesty Committee of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission but none of them were granted amnesty.

The third inquest finally got underway in Gherbeqha on Monday.

Yasmin Sooka from the Foundation for Human Rights, was part of the TRC, and discussed the case with eNCA.
