Creating a safe haven for women and children

JOHANNESBURG - Violence against women and children has been a major concern for years and the number of cases continues rising daily.

This has brought to the spotlight the amount of work needed to protect women and children across the country.

The deputy police minister, Dr Polly Boshielo, says more money is needed to fight gender-based violence, and ensure more effective prosecutions.

Advocacy Consultant from the MOSAIC Training Service and Healing Centre Kerryn Rehse is in two minds about this.

Rehse says focusing just on prosecution is not enough. She says there has to be a balance between responding to the crime but also preventing it.

"Violence is a social problem, so what are we doing to address that. Laws can only come into play when the violence has already happen," Rehsse says.
