Damage assessment underway following Joburg underground cable fire

JOHANNESBURG - City Power is assessing damage caused during a fire in service tunnels this weekend.

The blaze on Raheema Moosa Street on Saturday plunged parts of the Joburg CBD into darkness.

Investigations into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but preliminary reports point to illegal mining.

Several areas are still without power as City Power works to restore supply.

The utility says it will take around seven days to restore electricity.

This isn’t the first underground fire.

At the end of March, a fire broke out near the M1 South under a bridge, affecting two lanes of the highway.

At the time, it was suspected that the fire was caused by cable theft and vandalism.
