CAPE TOWN - Gangs continue to wreak havoc in the Western Cape, defying police efforts to combat the crisis.
Central to this is the availability of guns and ammunition.
The ANC Western Cape spokesperson on community safety and police oversight, Benson Ngqentsu, says evidence suggests all mass shootings in the province are linked to illegal firearms.

This, he says, raises the question of the source of the illegal firearms
In a recent bust, police in the Western Cape recovered 19 firearms and an assortment of ammunition.
The cache was concealed in cooler boxes and safes at a house in Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain.
Western Cape police commissioner Thembisile Patekile said the bust was part of an orchestrated crackdown on gang violence in Cape Town.
Ngqentsu says a stable intelligence unit is needed to mitigate the rising violence.
