Education in crisis | 30 teachers fired for sexual misconduct

JOHANNESBURG - The Education Labour Relations Council has fired 30 teachers for sexual misconduct since April.

Their names will now be added to the National Child Protection Register.

Professional teachers' body, the SA Council for Educators, has also struck 31 members from its register.

"Once the perpetrator is found guilty out of that process we report them to the department of social development such that they are barred from working with children again," said the council's Cindy Foca.

"Because we would have made a determination that they are unsuitable to work in an environment where there will be children and they are dismissed.

"They can’t therefore re-enter the system even if they still hold their certificates to practice as teachers."
