Embattled Joburg's revenue war continues

JOHANNESBURG - Joburg officials warn that if the City is to survive, people need to pay up.

As the municipality battles mounting debt and collapsing finances, it is intensifying its crackdown on residents, businesses, and property owners who owe millions in unpaid bills.

It targeted defaulting customers in the inner city.

At one property in Berea, officials disconnected services after the owner failed to pay millions owed to the City.

Johannesburg is battling a deepening financial crisis and billions owed to creditors like Eskom.

The City said operations like these are no longer just about law enforcement, they’re about survival.

Officials warn that if residents and businesses don’t pay what they owe, service delivery will continue to suffer, and they will get cut off.

Mayor Dada Morero said the City can no longer afford non-payment.

Officials said these operations would now become a regular feature across Johannesburg.

The City warned that defaulting estates would be targeted next as Johannesburg ramps up efforts to recover billions owed to the municipality.
