JOHANNESBURG - Until South Africa improves its grid availability, any efforts for independent energy generation will come to naught.

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe says that over 3000 megawatts of supply were recently lost because the national grid did not have the capacity to carry it.

Speaking to energy industry leaders at the Enlit Africa event in Cape Town, Mantashe says potential producers should take geographical constraints into consideration before launching their developments.

"One of the major challenges facing us today is grid availability and unless we address the question of the grid and grid availability, we can try all our luck but we are not going to be able to," he said.
