'I am not an investigator' - Adams on failure to authenticate documents

CAPE TOWN – National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams has finally taken the stand before Parliament Ad Hoc Committee on Wednesday.

Centre to Adam's testimony was the allegation by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that he was reckless with sensitive crime intelligence.

Adams told the committee that he arrived at his office around 6am and found an envelope that appeared to have been slipped under his door.

When he opened it, he said it contained evidence of criminality implicating senior SAPS officials.

“There was one name that I knew and the others I did not,” he said.

Adams admitted he was unsure what to do at first because he did not have direct access to the Minister of Intelligence or Safe Security.

After speaking to a close friend, Major-General Andre Lincoln of the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), who has since passed away, Adams decided to open a criminal case with SAPS.

Adams was questioned about why he did not verify the authenticity of the documents and try to find out where they had come from.

In response he said he could not do so as he is not an investigator.

"I am not an investigator, if I had to investigate this thing I would have barked up the wrong tree. I gave it to the experts, the SAPS,"

Adam's testimony comes after he laid a criminal charge against Mkhwanazi, including allegations of assault, kidnapping, fraud and corruption.
