Illegal mining | Disused mines 'a haven for criminals'

Parliamentary committees are calling for the demolition of all abandoned mines to curb illegal mining.

JOHANNESBURG - There's no cooperation between some government departments when portfolio committees conduct oversight visits.

Various parliamentary committees are conducting joint oversight visits to several disused mines in the North West.

The committees are calling for the demolition of all abandoned mines to curb illegal mining.

"We are not happy with the North West. We think that there is a lot that the department has to do," Luzipo said.

"There’s even been a request from a portfolio committee on mineral resources' point of view, we may have to have an overall meeting with all regional managers so that they can understand what is the expectation of portfolio committees when they visit some of these areas."
