Khampepe Commission hears call for action on apartheid-era prosecutions

JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority needs to be better capacitated and resourced in order to revisit and pursue unresolved apartheid-era crimes.

That's the submission by veteran journalist and author Michael Schmidt.

He's been testifying at the Khampepe Commission in Johannesburg.

Schmidt conducted extensive work on unresolved TRC cases.

He says it’s never too late as the NPA can still pursue outstanding matters.

But it needs increased capacity.

“We need a fully activated, innovative, staffed and funded National Prosecuting Authority, which has the spine to go for all viable remaining cases with vigour and across the political spectrum.

"That was the whole point of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that it didn’t matter which background you came from, you should have your day in front of the cameras in the light of justice and a time for your deeds, and we need that as a country," he said.

The Commission's proceedings resume on Friday with a new witness taking the stand.
