Late for school? Stripped, slapped and beaten

VOSLOORUS - Seventeen pupils at a Vosloorus school said they were stripped, slapped and beaten with shoes for arriving late.

The Gauteng Education Department has confirmed that members of a private security team at Erasmus Monareng Secondary School assaulted pupils.

While some parents are calling for tougher discipline, the law is clear: corporal punishment is illegal.

The incident has also exposed a difficult debate over discipline in schools.

But whatever disciplinary problems schools face, the Education Department said violence against pupils cannot be the answer.

For the pupils at Erasmus Monareng, the demand now is simple: they want those responsible for what happened to them held accountable.
