JOHANNESBURG - With the new AARTO demerit system for motorists expected to come into effect from 1 July 2026, taxi operators have warned of potential job losses.
The new system will see motorists earning demerit points in addition to fines and employers will now be held liable for non-compliance of their drivers.
Officials say the new AARTO demerit system will promote safer driving, forcing repeat offenders to think twice before breaking the law.'
Meanwhile, legal experts warn that municipalities are scrambling to collect outstanding traffic fines before the new system comes into effect.
Some motorists have welcomed AARTO as a means for accountability.
But with concerns that the law may exist only on paper, motorists and legal experts warn that enforcement must be consistent, or risk the system becoming yet another avenue for corruption.
