Mass shootings and gang violence still too high in WC

CAPE TOWN - Western Cape crime statistics show that the province recorded a reduction in almost all categories of crime between January and March this year.

Despite this, the province still recorded 11 murders a day in that period.

Provincial Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile says crime levels in the province remain alarmingly high, and he is especially alarmed about continued mass shootings.

Despite the recent SANDF deployment, most communities are saying they have not seen any reduction in violent crime.

Patekile disagrees, saying they have managed to stabilise most areas.

A former cop, Lennit Max, says firearms and ammunition are still far too easy for gangsters to get their hands on.

He wants the SAPS to move with the times to trace where the ammunition is coming from.
