The ANC, EFF and Northern Alliance filed the motion, after Odendaal announced the suspension of several officials in the city’s electricity and energy department.

He said, "the time is of course regrettable. I've made it clear that NMB is number one for looting in the country."

"It has about R20-billion of irregular spending: the majority of that funding it was spent in contravention of supply chain procedure."

"There was grand scale looting here in the city over the last couple of years... we have stumbled upon very one of the most corrupt practices uncovered yet in the electricity and energy department that has been going for a number of years."

"We have handed that investigation to the Hawks...some that is why this motion is coming at the critical at NMB. It is critical for us to break shackles of corruption that have kept the city on its knees for so long."
