One dead, 2 injured in Eiffel Tower stabbing

PARIS - One person is dead and two wounded after a stabbing attack in Paris on Saturday.

The attack took place close to the famous Eiffel Tower during a busy weekend night.

A man attacked a German tourist, and then crossed the river Seine before attacking others and injuring one with a hammer.

Police used a taser to neutralise the man, who was then taken into custody.

French authorities say the attacker was known to them as a radical Islamist and was being treated for mental illness.

Anti-terror prosecutors said they would take over the investigation.

Speaking after the incident, the French Interior Minister said the man had already been sentenced to four years in prison in 2016, for planning another attack, which he failed to carry out.
