Parliament warns against misusing disaster relief funds

JOHANNESBURG - No one should benefit from the suffering of people.

That's the stern warning from Parliament's Committee on Cooperative Governance.

It wants harsher action against those who misuse disaster relief funds.

It comes after floods hit over 6000 Eastern Cape households, with another cold front hitting the province.

The committee is also calling for more preparedness and more integrated responses.

The chairperson of the committee Dr Zweli Mkhize says they are aware of the dire state that the province is in following the floods and that their concern is the responsiveness of the government.

"There should be a quick response from the government because we do know now that there will be disasters happening in some parts of the country. At the same time responses need to be multi-departmental " he said.
