Pikitup to resume waste collection after protests

JOHANNESBURG -  The City of Joburg says Pikitup will resume waste collection after disruptions amid protests by casual workers.

The workers who are demanding permanent employment set alight Pikitup trucks at the Diepsloot Pikitup depot.

The City says an agreement has been reached to allow operations to resume at affected depots.

In a statement, Johannesburg MMC of Environment and Infrastructure, Jack Sekwaila, said waste collection affected the Randburg, Midrand and Malboro depots.

He said an urgent meeting with the City’s management and organised labour was held to address the issue.

“The meeting concluded with an agreement to resume normal operations while jointly addressing recruitment-related challenges,” Sekwaila said in the statement.

Sekwaila said the waste collection unit was implementing a catch-up plan to clear backlog in the affected areas.
