Police call for information on M1 robbery

JOHANNESBURG - Police are calling on motorists who were victims of a daring robbery on the M1 to report it immediately.

Drivers in peak hour traffic were accosted by armed men at the Crown Interchange near Gold Reef City.

Several suspected illegal miners have been arrested, but have not yet been linked to the attack.

The suspects, mainly South African and Lesotho nationals, were detained at the Primrose police station.

They face charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and illegal mining.

JMPD spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, said this incident is something never seen before during peak-hour traffic.

"The modus operandi that we do know of these criminals is that they'll target broken-down vehicles or if a vehicle has stopped in a secluded place.

"But during peak hour periods, that's something we've never seen before."
