Public sector strike | DA calls for tough action

The ongoing wage strike wreaked havoc with various hospitals and clinics being disrupted.

DURBAN - The DA in KwaZulu-Natal says if the provincial Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane fails to open criminal charges against striking Nehawu workers, it will open them itself.

The ongoing wage strike wreaked havoc with various hospitals and clinics being disrupted.

A patient died allegedly after an ambulance was prevented from entering Grey's Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.

"This stage no response yet from the MEC's office, we've been watching to see if she does carry through with that action today," says the DA's Edwin Baptie.

"We believe the death of a young mother in Pietermaritzburg cannot be a consequence of a strike action."

According to Baptie, despite access in some hospitals being restricted, there are some nurses who are trying to keep wards going.
