Ramaphosa explains why Madlanga Commission interim report is not public

JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa has reiterated that the interim report of the Madlanga Commission will not be made public yet because the investigation is still ongoing.

He said releasing the report now could potentially jeopardise the Commission’s work and be unfair to people who have not yet testified before the commission.

Ramaphosa was responding to questions in Parliament on Thursday.

The first question posed to him was about the decision to withhold the interim report of the Commission of inquiry into criminality, political interference and corruption in the criminal justice system from, the public.

The president said the findings will be made public once the Commission submits its final report.

The interim report, which Ramaphosa received in December, identified prima facie evidence of wrongdoing.

In some cases, the Commission referred matters for criminal investigation.

The Commission also directed an urgent decision on prosecution and possible disciplinary action where required.

To ensure that these matters are given the necessary attention, Ramaphosa confirmed that he has directed the Minister of Police as well as the National Commissioner to constitute a special investigation task team reporting directly to the Commissioner.
