JOHANNESBURG - Rand Water as it kicks a major maintenance programme.
This first day of five will see some taps run dry in Ekurhuleni, Tshwane and parts of Mpumalanga.
The utility says the maintenance is essential in boosting system capacity to ensure long-term stability.
Joburg Water spokesperson, Nombuso Shabalala says the City of Gold will be affected by the first phase on 3 June.
But even then not all areas will be affected.
"Areas that will be affected are our Sandton systems, Midrand, Alexandra Park which is to the east, then South Hills. This is from 6 am to 4 pm," she said.

This maintenance is needed to improve ageing infrastructure to ensure that in future there are fewer water interruptions.
Shabalala says during this maintenance water pressure is expected to drop and as a result, contingency measures are in place to ensure that residents are not left stranded.
These plans include the deployment of water tankers especially in critical areas like schools, hospitals and old age homes will have stationary tankers.
How to prepare:
- Every household should have a minimum three-day supply of water, about 5 litres per person, per day.
- Use stored water wisely. Drinking, cooking, and hygiene should come first. Delay non-essential chores like laundry or car washing.
- Flush only when necessary.
- Turn off taps and check that appliances like washing machines are not running. This prevents accidents when the water returns.
