'SA criminal justice system needs to be restored' - Ramaphosa

CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa has stressed the urgent need to restore the country's criminal justice system.

He warned that rising crime continues to fuel fear and mistrust among the citizens of the country.

Ramaphosa was speaking at the News24’s On the Record Summit at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on Thursday.

The summit brings together leaders from business, academia, and civil society to discuss solutions for South Africa's problems.

It is here where Ramaphosa highlighted crime as one of the country’s biggest issues.

He acknowledged the criticism that come over the establishment of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is tasked to probe claims of criminality, political meddling, and corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other state institutions.

But he said it was important to establish such a commission to root out criminality.

"What the Madlanga Commission is doing is giving us a great opportunity to overhaul our criminal justice system to clean it out, to get all the thugs out of the roads and out of the system so that we restore that system," he said.
