JOHANNESBURG - KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made explosive revelations on Sunday at a press briefing.

He claims to have evidence of police involvement in high-profile crime syndicates.
He says the rot runs deep, with law enforcement officers, and high ranking politicians, aiding and abetting drug cartels, especially in Gauteng.
Mkhwanazi also made accusations of interference in the management of the police, and questioned the decision to disband the political killings task team.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has noted the statements and called for restraint.

He said: “This is a matter of grave national security concern that is receiving the highest priority attention. It is vital that the integrity of the country’s security services is safeguarded and that the rule of law is affirmed.”
“All parties to this matter are called upon to exercise discipline and restraint. The trading of accusations and counter-accusations threatens to undermine public confidence and sow confusion."
