SAPU welcomes proposal to renew Mkhwanazi's contract

JOHANNESBURG - The South African Policing Union (SAPU) has welcomed the suggestion that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s contract will be renewed for another term.

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola confirmed the news on Tuesday, as Mkhwanazi’s contract was set to expire at the end of March.

Masemola said details of extending the contract are being finalised.

SAPU spokesperson Lesiba Thobakgale said Mkhwanazi deserves the extension, given his track record and leadership in the province.

“We know him, he is a seasoned police officer even before the 6 July 2025 through the media briefing and what followed through.

“He is also a member of specialised task force, and well trained and has been doing a great work in KZN,” he said.

Thobakgale added that the union has long advocated for experienced officers to rise through the ranks, and sees the same potential for Mkhwanazi.

“When you look at Mkhwanazi he is still young and his age allows him. Maybe he will become the national commissioner in future,” he added.
