SA's electricity crisis | Limpopo hospitals turn to generators

LIMPOPO - With no end in sight for power cuts, the Limpopo health department is beefing up its backup generators for healthcare facilities.

The department has procured 19 generators of which 11 have been delivered to different facilities in the province.

Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba says the procurement of backup diesel generators will help mitigate the impact of blackouts on facilities.

She said, "we realised that the lifespan of our generators is going to give challenges, they won't be able to cope the frequent use that they're going to face."

"So depending on facilities, for instance, with the eleven that we've procured and already delivered we are talking about between 500 and 800 KVAs and these are big generators that has been able to run tertiary institutions, even some of our regional hospitals even though they will need three or two more generators."

"There are hospitals with generators whose life span has come to an end and when it breaks down and technician wants to fix only to realise that parts that are needed are not in the market hence we've installed there. While we've managed to fix the Mokopane generator but we are not comfortable that this generator will pull through hence we are prioritising them."
