'They are failing us': Multimillion rand wall project leaves workers unpaid

JOHANNESBURG - Workers employed on a multi-million-rand Prasa wall project have had enough.

The workers employed by Spec Africa Holdings claim their employer has failed to pay for their September wages and that they have had to fight for their money various times since 2024.

This wage delay has left many struggling to afford basic necessities, including paying for rent and food.

Six contractors that supply the project also remain unpaid, leaving workers without essential resources.

The company was contracted to construct a protective barrier wall between Pretoria Station and Wolmerton.

The contract is valued at nearly R385 million.

In a letter dated 30 September, Spec Africa Holdings confirmed it could not pay salaries on time, blaming delayed client payments and a cash-flow shortfall.

But this has added to workers' frustrations.

Spec Africa’s management staff and vehicles have been removed from the sites, and its Midrand office was closed.

In a written response to eNCA, the company blames delayed client payments but says confidentiality prevents it from disclosing details.

It said it's looking for money to settle outstanding wages, denies recurring salary delays and maintains it has kept workers informed.
