Unemployed youth demand review of hiring processes

CAPE TOWN - Residents of Mandalay and Montclair in Cape Town are angry at alleged job discrimination.

They are calling on the City to investigate hiring processes for the expanded public works programme.

A local councillor is accused of prioritising other areas, while they are overlooked for opportunities.

They delivered a list of demands by hand to his office on Tuesday.

Ward 76 councillor Avron Plaatjies accepted the memorandum, but hit back at protesters.

"They are entitled to their opinions, we have seen those lists. Three weeks ago we had met with the leadership of Mandalay and Montclair and we’ve addressed these issues they put up," he said.

Residents have given Plaatjies until 14 September to respond to their memorandum.

They say they won't hesitate to return to the streets if their demands are ignored.
