Water expert: SA has lost 25% of gauging stations
JOHANNESBURG - Water expert Anthony Turton says South Africa has lost 25 percent of its gauging stations since 1994.
The Vaal Dam is being reduced to manageable levels.
Two more floodgates were shut on Saturday and the dam's capacity has dropped from 120 to 113 percent.
But eight sluice gates remain open.
The opening of the gates posed a major threat to communities on the banks of the Vaal River, who were already dealing with substantial flooding.
Residents continue to salvage the little they have left after the flooding.
Many are still evacuating their homes, while several businesses were forced to close shop.
