'We will resist US imperialist aggression' - Venezuela's ambassador

JOHANNESBURG - Venezuela's ambassador to South Africa has thanked the country for its stance on the political turmoil in the South American nation.

Carlos Feo Acevedo was speaking at the SACP's memorial for Joe Slovo.

He says Venezuela will resist the US' attempts to take control.

"Yes, they have kidnapped our President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. It has been a big hit for us. We are not defeated. We will never be defeated, our revolutionary government is still in place, and so our institutions

"The spirit of the people in Venezuela is high and alive, and we will resist this US imperialist aggression. We will prevail, we will win..."

Maduro appeared before the New York court on charges of narco-terrorism and drug trafficking.

He was abducted in a US special forces raid in Caracas on Saturday. 

Maduro pleaded not guilty and told a federal judge in Manhattan, "I'm innocent. I'm not guilty."

Maduro's wife likewise pleaded not guilty. 

The judge ordered both to remain behind bars and set a new hearing date of 17 March.
