WATCH | Court ruling on blackouts too tight - expert

JOHANNESBURG - Government will need at least 4 to 6 months to obey the court ruling on rolling blackouts.

This according to energy expert Sampson Mamphweli.

Ramaphosa responds to High Court ruling on blackouts

The High Court in Pretoria has given the Electricity Minister until the end of January to take reasonable steps to prevent power cuts at public hospitals, clinics, schools and police stations.

However, Mamphweli says this deadline is too tight.

At the same time, in response to the judgment, President Cyril Ramaphosa says government will take the necessary steps to ensure hospitals and schools are less affected by blackouts.

The court also ruled that power cuts are a result of Eskom and government's failure, that it infringes on the basic rights of South Africans.
