JOHANNESBURG - Wednesday brought the unexpected postponement of the budget speech.
All parties have admitted that the Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana’s proposal to raise VAT by 2% derailed the budget process.
The DA which is a member of the Government of National Unity had threatened not to vote for the budget in parliament.
Mervyn Abrahams, coordinator of the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Programme, discussed how the VAT increase could affect the national food basket.
