JOHANNESBURG - Shackdweller movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo says the Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, has declared war on the poor.
An increase in informal settlement structures is worrying Gauteng officials. As people flock to the province to seek better opportunities, government is failing to keep up with the demand for housing.

Lesufi claims most shack dwellers in illegal settlements are undocumented and organised by criminal syndicates. The Premier says the province is going to dismantle informal settlements.
But Abahlali baseMjondolo says the majority of shack occupants are South Africans, who are victims of poverty and ANC failures.
