Equal Education comments on the struggle for sanitation at schools

JOHANNESBURG - Access to clean water and sanitation remains a problem in schools across the country.

The Department of Basic education missed its deadline to eradicate all pit toilets in public schools by 31 March.

141 schools still use pit latrines, the majority of them in the Eastern Cape.

La Rochelle Primary School in Rosettenville has had ongoing issues with sanitation since October last year.

Pupils have been forced to use mobile toilets that are not suited to high usage and are a hygiene risk.

Equal Education National Organiser, Aluyolo Mbeki, discussed this issue with eNCA.
