No 'greener pastures' for 49 Afrikaaners claiming refugee status

JOHANNESBURG - A group of South Africa Afrikaners is expected to arrive in the United State this evening.

They heeded President Donald Trump’s call to relocate to the US as refugees while accusing the government of discriminating against them.

But the Centre for African Diplomacy and Leadership at the University of Johannesburg Dr Oscar Van Heerden says the grass won't necessarily be greener on the other side.

He says life in the US would see this group having to work twice as hard.

"Already the US economy ordinary Americans have expected to work two or three jobs to keep up with the cost of living. It is likely that this cahoot of so-called refugees will also have to work very hard to survive in the US. They will soon find out that life is not greener on the other side," he said.
