Ramaphosa decision on Madlanga report ‘ considerate approach’, says expert

JOHANNESBURG -  President Cyril Ramaphosa's decision to act on the Madlanga Commission's interim report recommendations is a reactive and considerate approach.

That's the view of Professor Jacob Mofokeng, from the Department of Criminology and Security Science at the University of South Africa.

He argues the president's actions will address the many concerns of South Africans.

A team led by acting police minister Firoz Cachalia and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola, will investigate specific individuals mentioned in the interim report.

“The issue of political will to say that the presidency has really been dragging its feet in terms of certain challenges that are brewing in SA. The President is showing confidence and putting SA citizens at ease.”

Mofokeng said the actions outlined by Ramaphosa were indicative that he had heard the concerns of South Africans.

He did, however, note that the Presidency had missed an opportunity to also comment on allegations against suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and actions that would follow.

Meanwhile, SAPS national spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said investigations of implicated officials were already underway.

Mathe said a five-member investigative team has already been looking into the names of officers mentioned during testimonies. Two senior officials have already been suspended.

Mathe said the team was appointed on 11 November and provided their first report on 26 November.

“On the latest directive, the normal disciplinary processes will then indicate whether those names that have been mentioned in the president's statement will be suspended or not."
