Most Dirt Wins: Episode 4 Brings the Journey to a Close at Coffee Bay

SPONSORED - After three days of navigating some of South Africa’s toughest terrain, Most Dirt Wins reaches its final chapter in Episode 4, as both teams make their last push toward Coffee Bay and the iconic Hole in the Wall.

With just one day remaining, the challenge is still wide open. Team Two trails by 52 kilometres and must seek out every possible gravel road if they hope to take the lead. Back behind the wheel of the Landtrek 4Action, both teams leave Port St Johns with a single focus: maximise dirt kilometres before reaching the finish line.

The final route winds through rural villages and lesser-known back roads along the Wild Coast. Along the way, the teams navigate livestock-filled roads — part of what the locals refer to as the “Transkei Big Five” — and learn more about the cultural significance of Nguni cattle, reinforcing the deep connection between people, land and tradition in the region.

As the teams push closer to the coast, local advice warns of washed-away bridges ahead. Determined not to turn back, they reroute through village roads and eventually face a flooded crossing near the Mthatha River mouth. With no viable alternative, the Landtrek’s 4x4 capability is put to the test as the teams carefully wade through, continuing toward the finish.

From the cold highlands of Lady Grey to the warmth of the Indian Ocean, Episode 4 highlights the dramatic contrast of landscapes covered over four days. Colourful homes, winding dirt roads and coastal views accompany the final stretch to Hole in the Wall — one of the Eastern Cape’s most recognisable landmarks.

After hundreds of kilometres and countless off-road challenges, both teams arrive at the finish line to await the final results. The announcement confirms Team Two as the winners, having covered 47 more kilometres of dirt over the course of the journey.

The series concludes on a reflective note, emphasising that Most Dirt Wins was about more than competition. From mountain passes and community deliveries to cultural exchanges and remote back roads, the journey showcased both the diversity of the Eastern Cape and the Landtrek’s ability to handle every environment along the way.

With the ocean as a backdrop and the vehicles parked at the edge of the continent, Most Dirt Wins comes to an end — a four-day reminder that some of South Africa’s most memorable destinations are reached only by taking the toughest roads.
