JOHANNEBSURG - Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie is keen for South Africa to stage another Rugby World Cup.
SA Rugby has indicated it has little appetite to bid to host the showpiece event it last hosted in 1995.
This follows the expensive but unsuccessful attempt to host the 2023 tournament.

The bidding process for the 2035 Rugby World Cup is currently underway, having officially launched in September 2025. As of early 2026, interested parties include Argentina, Spain, Japan and Italy.
McKenzie is on a mission to secure corporate funding and then have the Union tender again.
"SARU [SA Rugby Union] can't go and make a commitment on behalf of government but I'm going to work very hard to get sponsors to come on board. I have started speaking to some sponsors then I will go to government like we did we Formula 1."
