JOHANNESBURG - Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has slammed SAFA over the stalled appointment of Pitso Mosimane, insisting the former Bafana Bafana coach should be paid what Hugo Broos was earning.
Although SAFA’s NEC approved Mosimane’s appointment earlier this month, no official announcement has been made.
McKenzie questioned why Mosimane should have to justify his salary expectations when SAFA had previously paid another coach significantly more for the same job.
McKenzie said:
“Apartheid has done big damage to us. More damage than you can imagine. The fact that you want Pitso to justify a bigger salary, and yet you just offered another man, who does the same job as Pitso, much more, is that apartheid legacy in our brains?”
“Pitso must be paid what Hugo Broos was getting. Pitso has won cups. He has built a name for himself and he is our product,” he added.
SAFA and Mosimane have reportedly reached an agreement in principle on an annual salary of R10 million, but the high-profile appointment remains deadlocked over non-financial legal matters.
Mosimane was previously in charge of Bafana in a caretaker capacity in 2007 and from 2010 to 2012.
Bafana Bafana are due to face Guinea and Eritrea in back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.
