Andy Mothibi appointed as the new head of NDPP

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Advocate Andy Mothibi as South Africa’s new National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP).

Mothibi's appointment comes into effect from 1 February 2026

The appointment follows an open selection process.

The advisory panel concluded that none of the recently interviewed candidates were suitable for the role.

Mothibi is currently head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and brings experience as a public prosecutor, magistrate and senior legal executive. 

Ramaphosa has thanked outgoing NDPP Advocate Shamila Batohi for her service.

Leonard Lekgetho has been appointed acting head of the SIU, to fill the vacancy left by Mothibi.
