Confidentiality clause halts public release of National Register for Sex Offenders

CAPE TOWN - The delay in making the pubic release of the National Register for Sex Offenders have been attributed to strict confidentiality provisions under the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Act.

The Justice and Constitutional Development Department's plan to make the National Sex Offenders Register public has been delayed.

The register was meant to be released on 28 February.

"We realised that there is a clause that if we do not address it, it may get us into trouble with the law.

"The clause says anyone and everyone who can share that information or publisise it in any manner they will be against the law.

As a result, the mister requested that there be a process to review this legislation," spokesperson for the department Terrence Manase said.

Manase said there is no set time frame as to when the review process will be concluded; however emphasised that it has been prioritised.

"The Minister is committed that necessary processed are followed with speed," he said.
