Decison on budget and VAT expected soon - Mbalula

JOHANNESBURG - ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula says the country can expect a decision on the budget, and the contentious zero-point-5 percentage point VAT increase soon.

This comes as there has been strong opposition among several political parties to the VAT hike, which is due to kick in on 1 May.

This battle comes after Parliament passed the 2025 Budget presented by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.

The DA argues that both the National Assembly and National Council of Provinces (NCOP) adopted the fiscal framework without proper process while EFF lawyer, Tembeka Ngcukaitobi has accused the finance minister of deception in getting the budget passed.

Mbalula says the discussion with GNU partners should be finalised in the next day or two.

"We've been engaging as of last week. Other political parties have gone to court. As we conclude our discussions, we should be in a position between today and tomorrow, to have a joint press conference on the matters of the budget and the way forward about VAT," he says.
