Eastern Cape ANC contempt case removed from urgent roll

KUGOMPO CITY – The Eastern Cape High Court has removed the ANC contempt case from the urgent roll.

The ANC in the Eastern Cape was meant to hold its provincial elective conference this weekend, but on Thursday, the court handed down an interim order to halt the conference because some members of the party were unhappy with irregularities in preparation for the conference.

Despite this, the other faction continued with conference proceedings, including the registration of delegates.

The members then approached the high court on an urgent basis to declare their comrades in contempt of court for continuing with conference preparations.

On Saturday, the party’s provincial secretary, Lulama Ngcukaitobi, informed delegates that the conference was postponed indefinitely.

After sending a letter to the other side, proceeding with the contempt case on an urgent basis became moot.

Advocates Dali Mpofu and Tembeka Ngcukaitobi appeared for the applicants, while advocate Apla Bodlani appeared for the respondents.

The parties presented a draft order by consent to Judge Murray Lowe, who accepted it and made it so.

The matter does not completely go away; it will now be placed on the normal opposed motion roll. The parties have been given different dates to file, and the matter has been postponed to a later date. The costs have been reserved.
