The Democratic Alliance and EFF brought an urgent application before Cape Town High Court to halt the increase. Both parties challenged the legality of the hike, announced as part of the revised fiscal framework.
According to the EFF this was a necessary intervention to protect the poor and working class.
The court also ordered that Godongwana, the National Assembly Speaker and National Council of Provinces speaker to pay the legal costs of the DA and EFF.
