Hijacked buildings | City of Joburg vows to crack the whip

JOHANNESBURG - Hijacked buildings remain a huge concern for the City of Johannesburg.

This follows the death of 77 people who died after a fire broke out at a five-storey building in Marshalltown.

City officials claim they have made an effort to address the issue and vow to reclaim hijacked buildings.

The MMCs for Public Safety and Roads decided to inspect one of the buildings.

The City has vowed to move people in the coming days.

Previously, the city said legal issues were impeding its efforts to tackle hijacked buildings.

But it says it will deal with these buildings, regardless of whether a court order is in effect.

The city says it will return to the building to evict everyone staying there in a few days.

It has also promised to continue tackling dilapidated buildings.
