Illegal mining in SA | Cele wants holes cemented shut

JOHANNESBURG - Police Minister Bheki Cele says mine holes will be covered with cement.

He was speaking after finding several previously sealed shaft entrances reopened.

Cele said they'll now be forced to take drastic measures against the zama zamas reopening mine holes.

"We're not going to be delaying this issue of closing those holes because there are people that are illegally there," he said.

Cele said they're now awaiting a report investigating complaints about the Langlaagte police station not moving fast enough to put an end to illegal mining In the area.

The report is due on Thursday.

Angry residents of Riverlea have warned the government that they'll take up arms if there isn't visible policing in the area.
