MATATIELE – Eastern Cape police have confirmed the rearrest of one of the men who escaped from Afsondering Police Station cells in Maluti on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said Siphelele Mkhulisi was found still asleep and rearrested without incident on Monday.
“Acting on intelligence received by a task team member that Mkhulisi was asleep at his aunt’s residence in the Masakala Location (Matatiele), the task team – comprising Vispol, K9, and Detectives tactically approached the premises. The suspect was found still asleep and was arrested without incident,” she said.
Mkhulisi was originally in custody for a murder case.
He was one of eight men who were originally in custody for serious offences, including murder, rape, crimen injuria, and assault.
The other men still at large are:
- Asiphe Yawu
- Abraham Gobozi
- Kwanele Mzala
- Thabo Nana
- Siphelele Nondolo
- Anele Ludidi
- Sinethemba Mazendala
Gantana cautioned members of the public not to apprehend the escapees themselves as they are dangerous criminals.
