JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed the late Ambassador Nathi Mthethwa as a driving force behind South Africa’s global partnerships.
Ramaphosa described Mthethwa’s death as both premature and tragic.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation confirmed on Tuesday that Mthethwa, 58, was found dead in a Paris hotel.
Mthethwa had been serving as Ambassador to France since December 2023, following a 15-year career in the Cabinet, including roles in Sport, Arts and Culture, and Police, among others.
Ramaphosa sent condolences to the Mthethwa family, calling his passing “a moment of deep grief.”
DIRCO says French authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
