SAFA backs Hugo Broos in racism row

JOHANNESBURG - SAFA has broken its silence on the allegations against Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

The Belgian is accused of racism and sexism after comments he made about Bafana Bafana defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and his agent.

He was even reported to the Human Rights Commission for his allegedly "racially suggestive" dressing down of the player for being late to the Bafana camp.

SAFA, however, says Broos' comments were misinterpreted and later amplified into unfounded accusations.

Broos himself says his remarks were aimed purely at football matters, not at race or gender.

SAFA adds that a language barrier contributed to the misunderstanding.

It says in Broos’ four years in charge, there has never been a single complaint of discrimination.

The association further credits Broos for transforming the national team and insists players and staff are fully behind him.
