CENTURION - Government has classified severe weather as a national disaster in six provinces.
The affected provinces are the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, North West, and Mpumalanga.
The regions have been experiencing severe storms that triggered widespread flooding,
causing substantial damage to infrastructure and displacing scores of people.
A 12-year-old girl died after being swept away by raging floods in the North West last week.
Over 40 people trapped in the floods were rescued in Kouga in the Eastern Cape.
The storms have left a trail of destruction on the Garden Route, with authorities saying it's the worst disaster in 30 years.
The classification will enable government to unlock relief funds to enable recovery and rehabilitation efforts.
Meanwhile, heavier downpours are predicted to hit parts of the Western Cape and the Northern Cape.
